Gravestone Inscriptions

The churchyard at All Saints’ was used for burials until Winterton’s town cemetery opened in the 19th century, and its surviving inscriptions preserve the names of generations of parishioners.

The churchyard at All Saints’ was used until the town cemetery opened in the 19th century; since then the churchyard has seen few burials. Later in the 20th century the gravestones were moved to allow easier maintenance of the churchyard. A plan of the churchyard drawn before the move shows 281 gravestones, and records have been found of the inscriptions on 127 of them. The record consists of a diagram on paper showing the shape of each headstone, within which the inscription is written. An image was made for each gravestone inscription, listed in family-name alphabetical order. The paper record was made in pencil or biro and some entries are not very clear; every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, but please bear in mind that some inscriptions were incomplete when the record was made, as weathering of the stone led to a lack of clarity — there may be some transcription errors. The fuller archive of 127 recorded inscriptions (out of the 281 gravestones originally mapped in the churchyard) is held on paper by the church and has not all been reproduced online here — please contact us if you are researching a name that is not listed below.
